Vlastné telo húb sa skladá z hustej povrazcovitej spleti hýf. Tento útvar môžemem voľným okom pozorovať ako biele pavučinové vlákna, ktoré nazývame mycéliom lebo podhubím. Za istých podmienok môže mycélium tvoriť plodnice, teda huby v populárnom ponímaní, ako ich poznajú praktický hubári. Plodnica je iba reprodukčným orgánom huby (práve tak ako šiška na smreku, jablko na jabloni apod.). Bazídiové huby z rodu pečiarkotvarých - Agaricales - tvoria zväčša klobúkaté plodnice. Na spodnej strane klobúka takejto plodnice býva rúrkovitý alebo lupeňovitý hymenofor (rúchonos). Rúrky alebo lupene sú vystlané hyméniom (výtrusorodným rúchom), ktoré má určitú skladbu. Tam sa na bazídiách tvoria zvyčajne 4 výtrusy (niekedy iba dva), ktoré sa zovňajškom od seba nelíšia, avšak nie sú rovnakej fyziologickej povahy, resp. pohlavia. Dva a dva sa od seba navzájom fyziologicky líšia. Keď výtrusy dozrejú, oddelia sa od bazídia a vypadnú do voľného priestranstva. Z každého výtrusu, ktorý vyklíči, vyrastie vlákno (hýfa) rozrastajúce sa na podhubie (mycélium). Podhubie, ktoré vznikne z jedného výtrusu, je primárne a nie je schopné tvoriť plodnice. Keď dve primárne podhubia rôznej povahy (niečo ako + a -) splynú (kopulujú), vzniká sekundárne podhubie. Iba toto podhubie je schopné za priaznivých podmienok vytvoriť plodnice, v ktorých sa znova utvárajú vo výtrusorodnom rúchu bazídiá s výtrusmi a celý kolobeh rozmnožovania sa môže opakovať. Tak vznikajú pohlavné výtrusy. Okrem toho sa mimo plodníc a niekedy aj na plodniciach utvárajú nepohlavné výtrusy, tzv. konídiá.
